Trinket has shut down: a free alternative for Python and turtle

Trinket closed for good on August 31, 2026. CS Room is a free Trinket alternative for Python and turtle: students write and run Python in the browser, their files are saved, and you get classes, autograding and a gradebook. It works on Chromebooks.

What happened to Trinket

Trinkets, courses and accounts can no longer be opened or exported (trinket.io). Trinket can't recover work that wasn't downloaded before the shutdown. If you pasted code into your LMS, Drive or an email, that copy is still there.

What you get in CS Room

• Python 3.12 with a terminal, so input() works. Files and pip packages stay between sessions.
• Turtle and tkinter programs open in a pop-up window. If Chrome blocks it, allow pop-ups for csroom.org.
• Web pages get a Preview tab, and a Flask app gets a public URL.
• Starter code is copied to every student. Input/output cases grade the work, and due dates collect it.
• The gradebook takes overrides, which is how you score a drawing by hand.
• You can open any student's workspace and edit with them live.

Moving Python and turtle off Trinket

1. Request a teacher account. We set teachers up within a day or two.
2. Create a class. Add each project with New assignment, then Upload a folder from your unzipped export, or Start from scratch.
3. End each turtle program with turtle.done(). Trinket left drawings on screen after the program finished. Standard Python closes the window.
4. Publish and share the class link.

Python 2 code like print "hello" has to become print("hello"). To grade what a program prints, see Writing assignment tests.

Before you switch

CS Room can't be embedded in another web page, and students have to sign in. There's no Trinket importer. Block-based, GlowScript, music and R trinkets have no equivalent here. pygame works after pip install pygame; Python turtle online covers windowed programs.
