A free alternative to CodeHS
CS Room is a free CodeHS alternative with a coding workspace for every student, due dates, autograding and a weighted gradebook, and no paid plan.
CS Room is a free CodeHS alternative with no paid plan. Due dates and the weighted gradebook, which CodeHS keeps in Pro, are part of it for everyone. Students code in the browser, so it works on Chromebooks.
CodeHS Free vs. Pro
The free CodeHS plan has its courses, a web IDE, autograders and rosters. According to its plans page, due dates, the weighted gradebook, Google Classroom grade passback, full lesson plans and full code history are in CodeHS Pro, which is priced by quote.
What you get in CS Room
Each student gets a workspace with an editor, a Linux terminal and their own files, and pip packages they install stay installed. It runs Python, Java, C, C++, JavaScript, TypeScript, C# and Go, plus Jupyter notebooks. A student's website gets a public URL, and GUI programs open in a pop-up window.
You write the tests. They can be input/output cases, pytest or JUnit, and the hidden ones decide the grade. You also get due dates, a gradebook with weights, overrides and CSV export, and live editing in any student's workspace.

Move your assignments
- Request a teacher account. We set teachers up within a day or two.
- Create a class. Add each assignment with New assignment, either uploading your code or starting from scratch.
- Add input/output cases for grading, hide some of them, and check them with Try it.
- Publish with a due date and share the class link.
Writing assignment tests lists every grading option. For AP CS A, see Free online Java IDE for AP CSA.
Before you switch
CodeHS's curriculum stays with CodeHS. CS Room's lessons library is small, so plan to bring your own materials. Block-based coding and Google Classroom grade sync aren't available.
