Codeboard's shutdown: a free alternative for autograded exercises
Codeboard.io set October 31, 2026 as its shutdown date. CS Room is a free Codeboard alternative with hidden files, autograding and classes.
If your exercises live on Codeboard, CS Room is a free Codeboard alternative you can move them to. It has hidden files, autograding against your own tests, and a gradebook. Students work in the browser, so it runs on Chromebooks.
What happened to Codeboard
Codeboard set October 31, 2026 as its shutdown date. On that day its servers go offline and every project and submission is deleted (notice). If you can still sign in, export your projects with Download all. Submissions are exported separately, from each project's submissions page.
What you get in CS Room
Each student has one workspace that stays put between classes, with an editor, a Linux terminal and their files. Programs can read typed input, pip packages stay installed, and GUI programs open in a pop-up window.
- Languages: Python, Java, C, C++, JavaScript, TypeScript, C# and Go, plus Jupyter notebooks.
- Hidden files that never reach students.
- Tests in any language: input/output cases, pytest, JUnit, or your own script.
- Due dates that collect and grade everyone's work.
- A gradebook with weights, overrides and CSV export.
- A class link for joining, co-teachers, and live editing in any student's workspace.
How CS Room compares with Codeboard
| Codeboard | CS Room | |
|---|---|---|
| Student environment | An editor per exercise | One workspace per student, with a terminal |
| Languages | C, C++, Eiffel, Haskell, Java, Python | Python, Java, C, C++, JavaScript, TypeScript, C#, Go |
| Grades | LTI to Moodle, edX, Coursera | Gradebook with CSV export |
Move your exercises
- Request a teacher account. We set teachers up within a day or two.
- Create a class. Add each exercise with New assignment, then Upload a folder.
- Under File visibility, hide your test and solution files. Add your tests and check them with Try it.
- Publish with a due date and share the class link.
Most tests need only small changes. Codeboard's JUnit 4 tests need a pom.xml. Python 2 code has to be updated to Python 3. A driver that returns a result string should print a score instead, like 7/10. Writing assignment tests has the details.
Before you switch
Students sign in and join a class; there is no LTI. Grades export as CSV. Eiffel and Haskell aren't supported.
