Trinket has shut down: a free alternative for Python and turtle

Move your Python class to CS Room. As a free Trinket alternative for Python and turtle, it gives every student a full coding workspace in the browser rather than a snippet, along with classes, autograding and a gradebook. It runs on Chromebooks with nothing to install, and it's free, from the nonprofit Birdflop.

What happened to Trinket

Trinket shut down on August 31, 2026, and its trinkets, courses and accounts can no longer be reached or exported (trinket.io). If you didn't download your work before then, Trinket can't recover it; check your LMS, Drive or email for code you pasted elsewhere.

What you get in CS Room

• Python 3.12 with a real terminal, input(), files and pip packages that persist.
• Turtle and tkinter programs in a pop-up window. Allow pop-ups for csroom.org if Chrome blocks it.
• Web pages with a live Preview tab, and Flask apps at a public URL.
• Starter code copied to every student, autograding with input/output cases, and due dates.
• A gradebook with overrides, so you can score drawings by hand, and live editing in any student's workspace.

Moving Python and turtle off Trinket

1. Request a teacher account. We set teachers up within a day or two.
2. Create a class, then add each project with New assignment and Upload a folder from your unzipped export, or Start from scratch.
3. End each turtle program with turtle.done(): Trinket kept drawings on screen, but standard Python closes the window when the program ends.
4. Publish and share the class link.

Python 2 code such as print "hello" needs updating to print("hello"). See Writing assignment tests to grade text output.

Before you switch

CS Room doesn't embed in other web pages, students sign in, and there's no Trinket importer. Block-based, GlowScript, music, R and pygame trinkets have no equivalent; for those, Pickcode and CodeHS both import Trinket exports.
