Codeboard's shutdown: a free alternative for autograded exercises

Codeboard.io set October 31, 2026 as its shutdown date. CS Room is a free Codeboard alternative with hidden files, autograding and classes.

CS Room is a free Codeboard alternative that gives your class a whole coding classroom, not just exercises. Every student gets their own workspace in the browser, with an editor, a Linux terminal and files that persist, and you get classes, hidden files, autograding against your tests and a gradebook. It runs on Chromebooks with nothing to install, and it's free, from the nonprofit Birdflop.

What happened to Codeboard

Codeboard set October 31, 2026 as its shutdown date, when its servers go offline and every project and submission is permanently deleted (notice). If you still have access, export your projects with Download all, and each project's submissions from its submissions page.

What you get in CS Room

  • A persistent workspace per student: terminal, typed input, files, pip packages, and GUI programs in a pop-up window.
  • Python, Java, C, C++, JavaScript, TypeScript, C# and Go, plus Jupyter notebooks.
  • Hidden files that never reach students, and tests in any language: input/output cases, pytest, JUnit, or your own script.
  • Due dates that collect and grade everyone's work, and a gradebook with weights, overrides and CSV export.
  • One class link, co-teachers, and live editing in any student's workspace.

Move your exercises

  1. Request a teacher account. We set teachers up within a day or two.
  2. Create a class, then add each exercise with New assignment and Upload a folder.
  3. Hide your test and solution files under File visibility, add your tests, and check them with Try it.
  4. Publish with a due date and share the class link.

Most tests carry over with small changes: Codeboard's JUnit 4 tests need a pom.xml, Python 2 code needs updating to Python 3, and a result-string driver should print a score like 7/10. See Writing assignment tests.

Before you switch

Students sign in and join a class rather than arriving through LTI, and grades leave as CSV. There's no Eiffel or Haskell. Courses that need Moodle grade passback may suit CodeRunner.
